The Jewish Foundation for the Righteous 鈥 鈥淪hining a Light on the Human Spirit in the News from Ukraine鈥
Updates and inspiring stories of rescue and resistance in Ukraine now and in the past. The information presented can assist educators in developing lesson plans appropriate for classroom use, grades 4-12, about the power of how one person can make a difference.

Robert 鈥淏ob鈥 Holden, author of Visas to Shanghai: The Story of Feng-Shan Ho

Bob Holden, a retired educator, wrote the book, Visas to Shanghai: The Story of Feng-Shan Ho. The book focuses on the successful rescue efforts of Feng-Shan Ho who was the Chinese Consul-General in Vienna during the Holocaust. The book is appropriate for use in grades 4-12, and will be distributed to each educator participant, funded by Maddy & Harvey Rovinsky, 鈥淎dopt A Classroom Project.鈥

Betty Grebenschikoff, Holocaust survivor and author of Once My Name Was Sara

Betty Grebenschikoff was a witness in Berlin, Germany to Kristallnacht on November 9-10, 1938. Soon after, Betty and her family escaped to Shanghai, China. Each educator participant will receive the memoir, Once My Name Was Sara, funded by Maddy & Harvey Rovinsky, 鈥淎dopt A Classroom Project.鈥

Liz Elsby, Art Educator, 鈥淎rt as Resistance During the Holocaust鈥

Art is a powerful tool to use across the curriculum in order to teach about the theme of the human spirit. Artists resisted through their art, and art gave them the strength to keep fighting. Liz will share lesson plans and other resource information for students grades 4-12.

Stories of liberation may be the most powerful stories of resilience in the Holocaust. Survivors had to make the choice to 鈥渞eturn to life,鈥 after all they had been through, and to face the physical and emotional obstacles they still had to overcome. Sheryl will share brand new resources and lesson plans from Echoes & Reflections.

Lori Gerson, Educational Coordinator, Yad Vashem Overseas Education and Training Department, 鈥淭hey Fought Back: Armed and Spiritual Resistance during the Holocaust鈥

Contrary to popular belief, throughout the Holocaust Jews fought back, whether by taking up arms or by teaching, writing and holding on to their faith. Using digital resources developed by Yad Vashem for educators, Lori Gerson will discuss different methods and examples of resistance during the Holocaust and will introduce educators to the brand new resources from Echoes & Reflections.

How can animations be used to safely teach younger students about the Holocaust? How can they be used to explain difficult historical concepts? Yoni will guide us through the effective approaches as well as the limitations of using animations in the classroom.
