In 1971, as classes were just beginning at Stockton State College, a task force convened to select the school colors. The team considered uniqueness, practicality, economics, and attractiveness. One idea was to choose colors related to the environment and the pinelands setting, but another New Jersey college had already claimed green. After reviewing the options, black and white were chosen as the school colors.

While black and white have remained the University鈥檚 primary colors, its secondary colors have changed. By the 1990s, spirit wear and athletics uniforms used red to accent the black and white. In 2009, the accent colors changed to Columbia blue and yellow to align with the colors of the University seal. Each color represents something different:

  • Black suggests discipline, power, sophistication, confidence
  • White symbolizes new beginnings, innocence, completeness, efficiency
  • Blue indicates trust, reliability, confidence, perseverance
  • Yellow signifies enthusiasm, creativity, illumination, fun

Whether it is with a red, blue or yellow accent, Stockton Ospreys stand out as the only New Jersey school in black and white.
